The Risk of Storing Backup Tapes

Situation: You are storing backup tapes because your organization has made a determination that there is no "safe" way to get rid of a given tape. This stems from the fact that you have concluded there is no way of knowing what data is on it - and if it is subject to a litigation hold.

You suspect however that most of the tapes you are storing are not subject to a current litigation hold. The tape (and thus most documents on it), are past the document retention period published by the records management department of your company.
